Spritz, Aperitivo and Dolce Vita – Exploring Italian Spritz Culture

Glasses glowing orange on a sun-drenched terrace, ice cubes, bubbles and a slice of orange – few drinks capture the Italian way of life quite as instantly as a Spritz. In Italy, however, the Spritz is much more than just a popular cocktail. It is part of an entire culture, closely connected to the tradition of aperitivo, long afternoons spent with friends and that unmistakable la dolce vita lifestyle.

And at Piazza Italia, you don’t have to travel all the way to Italy to experience it. We offer a variety of Spritzes to discover and enjoy on our terrace at Ferenciek tere.

What Exactly Is a Spritz?

The story of the Spritz begins in Northern Italy, particularly in the Veneto region, with roots dating back to the 19th century. According to the story, soldiers of the Austrian Empire found the local Italian wines too strong and began adding a splash of water to them. This is also where the name comes from: the German word spritzen, meaning “to splash” or “to spray”.

Naturally, the simple combination of wine and water evolved considerably over the decades. Soda water was introduced, followed by bittersweet Italian aperitifs and prosecco, gradually creating the style of drink we now know as the Spritz.

The essence of a modern Spritz is balance: sparkling and refreshing, with just the right combination of bitterness and sweetness. Served over plenty of ice in a large wine glass, even the sight of it seems to say that it is time to slow down for a while.

Aperitivo: When a Drink Is About More Than Just the Drink

To truly understand the popularity of the Spritz, we first need to understand the Italian tradition of aperitivo.

Aperitivo is the period before dinner, typically in the late afternoon or early evening, when Italians meet for a drink, catch up with friends and enjoy a few light bites.

But the point is not simply to eat or drink. Aperitivo is a social ritual. It is the transition between the working day and the evening – a moment when everyone slows down.

And few drinks are better suited to it than a Spritz.

Its light, refreshing character makes it an ideal pre-dinner drink, but it works just as well alongside a long afternoon conversation or a relaxed weekend get-together.

There Is Much More to Spritz Than Aperol

Mention the word Spritz and, for most people, the bright orange Aperol Spritz will probably be the first thing that comes to mind. And for good reason: in recent years, it has become one of the world’s most recognisable Italian cocktails.

But the world of Spritz goes far beyond Aperol.

Different parts of Italy have their own aperitifs, and simply changing the base ingredient can give the cocktail an entirely new personality. Some variations are sweeter and fruitier, while others are more herbal, citrusy or distinctly bitter.

That is exactly what makes the Spritz so exciting: the same basic idea can take countless different forms.

Find Your Favourite Spritz at Piazza Italia

At Piazza Italia, we love showing that Spritz does not mean just one cocktail.

Our drinks menu features a variety of Spritzes, so you can discover a new version every time you visit. If the classic Aperol Spritz is the only one you have tried so far, it is worth exploring some of the other variations – you may find that a lesser-known combination becomes your new favourite.

Spritz is also the perfect drink to explore with friends. Order a few different versions, taste them together and decide which one suits you best.

Spritz and Italian Food – A Perfect Pairing

One of the great things about a Spritz is that it works beautifully not only on its own, but with food as well.

Its fresh, sparkling and slightly bitter character complements many dishes from Italian cuisine. It is a perfect way to begin a meal alongside antipasti, but it also pairs beautifully with a Neapolitan pizza.

And, of course, there is no rule saying you have to wait until dinner.

After a long day, sitting down with a Spritz on our terrace at Ferenciek tere is a perfectly good plan in itself.

A Glass of the Italian Lifestyle in the Heart of Budapest

Perhaps this is exactly why we love the Spritz so much. It does not try to take itself too seriously. It is not a cocktail that needs to be saved for special occasions.

Quite the opposite: it is about spontaneity, good company and the simple pleasures of life.

A sunny afternoon. A drink after work. The first round before a long dinner. Or one of those evenings when you sit down on the terrace “just for a Spritz” and somehow end up staying for dinner.

At Piazza Italia, we want to bring a little of that Italian way of life to the heart of Budapest. Take a seat on our terrace at Ferenciek tere, choose from our selection of Spritzes and discover which one will become your favourite.

Salute!
